Prelude (Suite No. 2) – Leo Brouwer (classical guitar solo)

Prelude (Suite No. 2) - Leo Brouwer (classical guitar solo) Listen

A livestream from Jonathan Godfrey published in Classical

This beautiful classical guitar solo was written when Cuban composer Leo Brouwer (b. 1939) was only 15 years old. The influence of Bach pervades this nostalgic Prelude to create a sentimental masterpiece crafted only within Brouwer's first few months of attempting composition.

While Brouwer’s music would shift to the avant-garde in the the 60s and 70s, his style made an abrupt return to the Neo-Romantic simplicity of works like this later in his career, though generally infused with a more overt Afro-Cuban influence and experimental harmonic palette. Brouwer continues to be one of the most widely performed and celebrated composers in the guitar canon, and it’s hard to imagine a better piece to represent the dawn of his long and illustrious career than this Prelude.
